Anti‑Bullying Week takes place from Monday 16th to Friday 20th November, led by the Anti‑Bullying Alliance. This year’s theme, Break the Silence, encourages children and young people to recognise the power of their voice to speak up, support others and help create environments where kindness is the norm, not the exception.

At the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, we know that silence can allow unkind behaviour and prejudice to grow. Breaking that silence doesn’t always mean confrontation; it can be checking in on someone, telling a trusted adult, refusing to join in or simply showing kindness when it’s needed most. Respect isn’t something we practise only in school – it’s something we choose every day, even when we disagree with someone. Disagreement never gives permission for disrespect.

National Hate Crime Awareness Week is a moment to recognise the impact that hate crimes have on individuals and communities, raise awareness about prejudice and discrimination and empower people to stand together against all forms of hate. It’s also an important opportunity to help young people learn about respect, empathy and inclusion – supporting them to understand how we can prevent harm before it starts.

Our free Hate Crime Awareness Week resources are designed for both primary and secondary schools and focus on the idea of seeing the person, not the label. They encourage students to think about how their words and actions can help everyone feel included and build a sense of belonging within their communities. For Key Stages 3-4, we also explore what happened to Sophie in an age‑appropriate way, offering a real‑world example to help students understand the consequences of hate and why kindness and acceptance matter.
